European Urban Initiative

04 February, 2025

The European Urban Initiative (EUI) is a strategic program launched by the European Union to support sustainable urban development and foster innovation in cities across Europe. Its primary goal is to strengthen the capacity of cities to implement innovative and sustainable urban policies. The initiative focuses on key areas such as:

  • Sustainable Urban Development: Encouraging cities to adopt environmentally friendly policies and infrastructure projects that align with the EU's Green Deal.
  • Social Inclusion: Promoting initiatives that reduce inequality and improve access to essential services, housing, and employment opportunities.
  • Digital Transition: Supporting smart city projects that leverage technology to improve urban services and quality of life.
  • Resilient Cities: Enhancing urban resilience against climate change, natural disasters, and economic fluctuations.
  • Participatory Governance: Encouraging collaboration between public authorities, private sectors, and citizens to co-create urban solutions.

At the SMACITE project we have developed a curriculum for Smart Cities addressing the need for cities’ digital transition.
