In an increasingly competitive and evolving global tourism sector, the integration of smart cities and technology is reshaping how destinations attract and engage tourists. By leveraging the following strategic axes, Smart Destinations can enhance the tourist experience and community management simultaneously:

  • Governance
  • Innovation
  • Technology
  • Universal Accessibility
  • Sustainability

The Basque Country exemplifies this shift, where six locations have been recognized this year as six Smart Tourism Destinations: Bidasoa, Bilbao, Busturialdea-Urdaibai, Debagoiena, Getxo and Valles Alaveses, which stand out as benchmarks in sustainable, innovative and technological tourism management. These achievements highlight the significance of digital transformation in tourism positioning the Basque Country as a leader in smart tourism development and working towards smart touristic destinations.

These Basque destinations join other cities and regions already recognised, making the Basque Country a benchmark territory and a leader that stands out as an example to follow for other communities and territories that wish to embark on the path towards becoming Smart Tourist Destinations.
